Hope We Can Believe In (as shared at the #WeCanEndAIDS Rally)
Somewhere
In a small town with big city ideals
There is a child
Whose blood stream is a matrix
Binary code coursing his veins
Virus playing agent smith
Cloning to fight against him
He HOPEs for a cocktail that will help him heal.
In this diamond district
There is a girl who has never known
A day without disease.
She nightly grieves for her parents
But she continues to believe
In HOPE.
A HOPE to believe in.
I’ve been HOPE-ing for years.
Healing Others through Poetic Entertainment
Trying to Help Our People Evolve
While sneaking in a bit of HIV Outreach Prevention and Education
We HOPE
Hope for one of the smallest cities with the highest infection rate
Hope for organizations struggling with no funding.
Hope for the 1 in 20 in DC who are infected…
And the countless who are affected.
We hope for the hopeless, disenfranchised
Impoverished and faceless.
We hope for those who remain silent,
and the moments of silence as a result.
Lets be real,
Right now, someone is in a hospital waiting to die because their life is not “cost effective in this time of deficit.” Because of this, we hope.
Hope for Housing Opportunities for People Everyday
Not the never ending waiting list and infinite bureaucracy.
We hope for legislation
Creating policies that promote prevention globally of HIV and TB
While de-stigmatizing the lives of our friends and families.
We hope for a cure.
Someday. Sooner than later.
But we cant HOPE alone
Now is the time to heal.
To put our money where our mouths are and fully fund the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and put into motion acts that make it affordable to live!
Demand that instead of waging another war that separates us,
We declare war on poverty, housing instability, and HIV/AIDS;
Not we who are living with these conditions!
That we fully fund and support programs that are saving lives, including needle exchanges and outreach programs for sex workers.
That we make it safe again to carry condoms and promote safer sex
Without the fear of being arrested!
Fully fund and implement a strategy that will work throughout DC reducing infection rates while catering to our positive friends and family!
We have to do it.
We are the ones within this binary code
Opposing the zero action.
We are the healing we wish to see in a city/country/world
Addicted to silence and conditioned to be complacent
We are dandelion seeds blowing through wind,
Planting our resilience wherever we land.
We are the healing we need.
Our own last hope.
And that’s a hope we have to believe in.
